Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite is a powerful 2 application pack, featuring both Avex DVD to iPod Converted and Avex iPod Video Converter. With an excellent conversion speed, nice quality results and convenient pricing, this suite will make a lot of iPod fans extremely happy.
Feature Set (4/5)
Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite is packed with nice features that will appeal all novice users. Advanced users, however, will find that this iPod Video Suite lacks more professional features that all iPod “geeks” really love. That said, we still think that the Avex DVD to IPod Video Suite’s features are more than enough for the average user.
The first program in the suite (Avex DVD to iPod Converter) supports conversion of any DVD-video standard compliant disc into iPod MPEG-4 format, as well as into the H.264 high quality video format. Avex iPod Video Converter (the second component of the suite) allows conversion of TIVO files, MPEG-encoded videos, Windows Media videos (WMV files), RealMedia RM files, QuickTime MOV videos (not QT, though) and, of course, AVI files (in any of these formats: standard video for windows, DivX encoding and also XviD files) into iPod Video format.
The resulting video size and aspect ratio are fully customizable as well, and the balance between speed and quality is more than convenient.
Both applications in the suite make use of an ultra fast proprietary conversion engine, and although we never got to the “3X faster” that Avex mentions, we found these to be the fastest converter applications around.
The handy batch conversion mode allows you to set a list of source videos and get the conversion process running unattended, which is particularly useful for iPod power users.
Ease Of Use (5/5)
This suite’s intuitive interface is a combination of simplicity, usability and power. Most functions (including starting the conversion process) can be triggered with a single click, or two at most. The interface supports drag and drop for easy selection of the source video files.
Both applications work extremely well with the default settings, making this suite one of the most simple to use packages you will find on the market.
Ease Of Installation And Setup (5/5)
The Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite is as easy to install as it is to use: just a couple of clicks and voila, you are done. No complications, no long list of components to choose from, no hassles. Plain and simple as it should always be. In fact, the only way that this suite could be easier to install is if it came embedded into the OS itself.
Quality Of Copy (4.5/5)
When you see a fast converting application, the first two words that come into your mind are “crappy copy”. Well, with this Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite that is not at all true. Even under the minimum requirements (Windows 98 running on a Pentium MMX-class CPU) the video output quality is more than decent. And since the conversion settings are heavily optimized to improve video play on the iPod device, the results are frankly awesome. Of course, the suite gives its best when running on a P4 system with lots of RAM, but unless you are in desperate need for quality for your iPod videos (for instance, if you are a professional video designer), you can perfectly live with it.
Software Stability (5/5)
We have tested the Avex DVD to iPod Video Suite on several different Windows systems and found no problems at all, not even when running on low-memory systems with disk compression enabled.
Due to the software’s ability to detect CPU and implement MMX, 3DNow!, SSE, SSE2, Dual Core and Hyper-Threading optimizations accordingly, the stability during the conversion process is outstanding.

The following now happens:

- Program automatically Fast Forwards to Main Movie Title
- Message appears above display screen, Ready to Record This Title
- There is sound BUT NO PICTURE IS DISPLAYED
- Then Select Convert
- Display screen goes ‘green’ and Avex Freezes
- Need to go to WIN Task Manager to End Task and close program
- I’ve Uninstalled Avex, then re-installed but still does the same!

Des Lawrie, your problem is probably caused by the DVD Setting, following the route:
Microsoft DVD Navigator
Cyberlink Audio Decoder 6.0 or above
Cyberlink Video Decoder 6.0 or above
should solve your problem.
I purchased the Avex DVD to Ipod/Batch video converter package and can’t register the program. The problem appears to be because avex-dvd.com is down. Any ideas? I’d like to be able to use the program I supposedly own.
avex-dvd.com seems to be up now. You should try again if you haven’t done so already.
